Heavy smoke was visible as Edgecombe County firefighters were responding to the house fire.

A dog was rescued from an Edgecombe County house fire Jan. 19.

Companies from Station 12 (West Edgecombe), Station 19 (Heartsease)  and Nash County Station 11 (Sharpsburg)  and Edgecombe County EMS units were dispatched to the 1200 block of Powell Road for a house fire around 1:45 p.m.

Responding firefighters could see a large column of  smoke in the sky and the first-in engine reported heavy smoke was pouring out of the home with fire showing out the back of the home.

Firefighters made an aggressive interior attack on the fire.

While inside the burning structure, firefighters from West Edgecombe were able to rescue the homeowner's dog.

Fire broke through the roof and they had moved to an exterior attack to fight the fire.

It took 45 firefighters over one hour using three 1 3/4-inch hoselines to bring the blaze under control.

There were no fire hydrants on the road near the home and they had to go over a half-mile to the nearest hydrant with tankers.
