West Springfield firefighters responded to a 911 call reporting a structure fire at 72 Roseland Avenue at 10:30 a.m. on Jan. 24, 2016.
Crews found smoke and fire venting from the second floor of an occupied single family dwelling. All six occupants had evacuated to prior to the department's arrival.
Shortly after making the push down the second floor hallway, firefighters encountered high heat/zero visibility conditions. Fearing a potential flashover, the crew exited the room and retreated to the stairway.
They called for a large caliber handline to be deployed to the Delta side to knock down the heavy fire now venting from the second floor.
After a brief exterior attack with a 2 1/2-inch hoseline, members re-entered the second floor to knock down the remaining fire.
The fire was marked under control in 30 minutes but not before doing $40,000 in damage to the structure.
