Pierce Enforcer Selected to Support Oregon Hazmat Teams
Pierce Manufacturing Inc., has delivered two Pierce Enforcer HazMat vehicles to serve with the Oregon Office of State Fire Marshal’s (OSFM) statewide Regional Hazardous Materials Emergency Response Teams System. This agency is charged with responding to hazardous materials emergency incidents that exceed the resources and capabilities of local jurisdictions. The vehicle replacement program includes a 10-year contract between the OSFM and Pierce for the procurement of Pierce Enforcer apparatus.
“The collaboration between the local area fire departments and the Oregon Office of the State Fire Marshal represents leadership on a national level in its approach to a uniform and comprehensive hazardous materials emergency response system,” said Jim Johnson, Oshkosh Corporation executive vice president and president of the Fire & Emergency segment and Pierce Manufacturing. “Pierce is proud to be selected to supply these vital apparatus to support this important mission.”
“Our mission is to respond to any hazardous materials incident, anywhere in the state, within two hours. These new Pierce vehicles are going to be a phenomenal new resource for our teams,” said Kyle Romey, member of the Albany, Oregon fire department and the equipment committee coordinator for the Regional Hazardous Materials Emergency Response Teams System. “The new vehicles are going to be more user-friendly, safer to drive, and far more maneuverable. Those are all huge advantages. They’re going to be a fantastic addition to our teams and their mission.”
In 1989, the Oregon Legislature authorized the OSFM to establish a statewide Hazardous Materials Emergency Response Teams system. Thirteen teams are strategically located statewide to provide swift response to hazardous materials incidents. To date, Oregon is one of the few states able to establish and maintain a program of this type.
Oregon’s regional response system is based on partnerships with local governments, the OSFM and industry wherein resources are shared to create a program that is both economical and successful. The OSFM contracts with local area fire departments to provide regional hazardous materials emergency response teams and services. HazMat teams work with and train first responders and industry to assure Oregon communities are prepared to respond to hazardous materials incidents and create safer communities.
Each Pierce Enforcer vehicle features a 70-inch extended length cab with a 24-inch raised roof (a four-door configuration with a rear wall walk-through), and seating for up to 10 team members. The vehicles also feature a seven-foot slide out in the body, a command area including a workstation with overhead and under desk cabinets, interior wall cabinets, as well as a light mast, electric awning, and roof storage compartments.
