Piles of money were found in a Milwaukee house fire as fire crews worked to extinguish the blaze.
The fire happened in January, but the Milwaukee Police Department only released the photos on Friday according to television station WISN 12ABC.
When firefighters were assess the damage done to the home at the corner of 46th and Custer streets, they found a hoard of $10 and $20 bills. It appears the money had fallen from the basement ceiling.
The photos released by the police department shows stacks of bills littering the basement floor, on top of a refrigerator and many bills deep. Much of it was charred, but much remains intact.
Why the money was in the building in the first place is a mystery, the television station reported.
The television station reported that neighbor said the homeowner did not know the money was in the building and was baffled by it as well.
The money was bagged up as part of the investigation.
The television station said the Milwaukee police referred questions to the federal Drug Enforcement Agency which also declined to say how much cash was seized, where it came from or if any arrests were made.
The television station says the house is now boarded up and attempts to reach the last home owner were not successful.
