June 26 -- A 34-year-old cadet died Tuesday after having a medical emergency at the Austin Fire Department’s training academy Monday, fire officials said.
Devon Coney, who had previously worked for the Fire Department as a civilian employee for four years, died Tuesday evening, officials said.
It is unknown what caused the medical emergency, officials said.
“Devon’s medical team had yet to find a reason for his condition at the time of his death, so we will have to wait for the medical examiner’s findings to learn more,” the department said in a statement Tuesday.
He had a medical emergency at 7:30 a.m. Monday at the academy and was taken to St. David’s South Austin Medical Center, fire officials said.
“Devon was one of the sweetest guys you’d ever have the privilege to meet, and we will all miss him terribly,” said fire department spokeswoman Michelle Tanzola. “As you can imagine, we are, quite simply, heartbroken.”
