A Maryland firefighter suffered a medical emergency while responding to an apartment fire early Sunday.

Crews from the Potomac Heights Volunteer Fire Department responded to the blaze at a single-story apartment complex just before 5:45 p.m., according to the department. Flames shot through the roof, and firefighters searched the building for residents, but no one was inside.

About 15 minutes into the response, an unidentified apparatus driver was trying to replace a section of hose that had burned through when he suffered a medical emergency. Other firefighters, EMTs and sheriff's deputies came to the aid of the firefighter, and he was revived and regained consciousness before arriving at the hospital.

Once at the hospital, the firefighter was in stable condition and placed in intensive care.

"We are extremely grateful for the assistance we received this morning from our surrounding fire stations and the community," the department stated.
