More than 200 Florida firefighters have been quarantined after more than a dozen tested positive for COVID-19.
The 214 Jacksonville firefighters are self-quarantining as part of the Centers for Disease Control's "contact guidelines" for the coronavirus, WJXT-TV reports. The move comes after 14 firefighters contracted the deadly virus.
Along with the self-quarantining, firefighters must wear masks between the time they leave their personal vehicles and when they put on helmets and other protective gear. Social distancing protocols also have been set up, with station beds spaced at least 6 feet apart.
“Our ability to protect and serve the citizens of Jacksonville is reliant on keeping our first responders healthy,” Mayor Lenny Curry said in a statement. "This means following CDC guidelines in the event they come in contact with anyone who tests positive for COVID-19."
More than 100 retired firefighters are available to replace the quarantined firefighters. They would need several days of retraining before returning to duty, WJXT added.
