Monroe Township Fire Capt. Joseph Liedel, a veteran firefighter for 28 years, suffered a medical emergency and collapsed in his driveway as he was responding to a call on July 31.

A Michigan firefighter died nearly a month after suffering a medical emergency while on duty.

Monroe Township Capt. Joseph Liedel had been hospitalized with an unexpected brain bleed on July 31. He had collapsed in his driveway while he was getting ready to respond to a call.

"It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that Monroe Township Fire Department share with you the line of duty death of Joseph Liedel, Captain with Monroe Township Fire Department," the department stated in an online update posted Sunday night. "Please keep his family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time."

Following his collapse, Liedel was taken to ProMedica Monroe Regional Hospital, and he was diagnosed with the brain bleed in the emergency room, the Monroe News reports. He then was flown to ProMedica Toledo Hospital, where he stayed in critical condition.

A GoFundMe campaign was started before his death, and it has raised more than $13,400. The page is still up, and the money raised will go to Liedel's family, according to the News.

“I can tell you that I have been praying that if Joe couldn’t get better, then please take him home. And now Joe is home," Lt. Calvin Schmitt, a friend and one of the firefighters who responded to Liedel's medical emergency, told the News.

Liedel had been with the department for 28 years, and his father had been a City of Monroe firefighter, the News added.
