At least eight people were killed in a shooting at a FedEx facility in Indianapolis late Thursday.
The shooting happened shortly after 11 p.m. at the shipping center near the Indianapolis International Airport, USA Today reports. Police determined it was an active shooter situation when they arrived at the scene.
Along with the eight fatalities, an unspecified number of people were injured in the incident. The suspected gunman, who wasn't identified, was found dead by police, and authorities believe the suspect killed himself.
"This is a tragedy," Indianapolis police spokesman Genae Cook said at an early Friday news conference, according to USA Today.
It's not known if the gunman was an employee at the facility or with FedEx. The reason for the shooting also was not immediately known.
“I saw a man with a submachine gun of some sort, an automatic rifle, and he was firing in the open,” Jeremiah Miller told USA Today.
FedEx released the following statement:
“We are deeply shocked and saddened by the loss of our team members following the tragic shooting at our FedEx Ground facility in Indianapolis. Our most heartfelt sympathies are with all those affected by this senseless act of violence. The safety of our team members is our top priority, and we are fully cooperating with investigating authorities.”
