KME and sales representative Bulldog Fire Apparatus have been awarded an order for three 109-foot AerialCat rear-mount ladders by the Boston, MA, Fire Department. The aerials will join the 10 KME pumpers and two rescues already in service in Boston. The apparatus will be built on KME Predator Severe Service chassis with a 475-hp engine, automatic traction control, engine brake and transmission retarder.

Also, KME and sales representative NAFECO have received an order from the Atlanta, GA, Fire Rescue Department for seven custom pumpers and three 101-foot tractor-drawn aerials, as well as five-year service and maintenance contracts for the apparatus. Atlanta currently operates three KME pumpers.

The pumpers will be built on KME Predator chassis and include a drive-line retarder, a two-stage, 1,500-gpm pump, 500-gallon water tank, 60-gallon foam tank, Class A foam system and a high-capacity hosebed with low and safe access just above the frame rails. The aerials will be built on KME’s Predator Severe Service chassis and will include a drive-line retarder, front bumper winch and 500-hp engine.

In addition, KME and sales representative Metz Fire & Rescue received an order from the Ottawa, Ontario, Fire Department for 12 custom pumpers to be built on KME Predator Severe Service chassis. Ottawa’s cabs will include both frontal collision (4Front) and rollover protection (RollTek) for all occupants. The pumping system includes a top mount pump panel with a 1,500 gpm pump, cold-weather package for extreme winter environments, 600-gallon water tank, 20-gallon foam tank and a Class A foam system.

KAPLAN UNIVERSITY has launched the College of Public Service, bringing together Kaplan’s Graduate Education, Arts & Sciences and Public Safety schools under one college encompassing a wide variety of disciplines with the common thread being public service.

With 40 degree and certificate programs, the College of Public Service equips and empowers students with the knowledge and experience to further their careers in the nonprofit or government sectors. Programs such as Education, Fire Science and Psychology are offered at the bachelor’s and master’s levels.

The introduction of the new College of Public Service will be complemented with a new online information resource center available at center-public-service.kaplanu.edu. This online resource will provide Kaplan University students, alumni and the general public with information, services and opportunities related to the public service field. It will also act as an interactive community for Kaplan University faculty to share their expertise and counsel based on their real life experiences.

PIERCE MANUFACTURING has announced that Manassas, VA-based Atlantic Emergency Solutions is the new Pierce apparatus dealer for North Carolina, expanding its current territory that includes Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, the District of Columbia and portions of West Virginia. The change is prompted by the retirement of Triad Fire Inc. founder Dick Hastings. Gerald Sapp (a partner at Triad Fire) joins Atlantic Emergency Solutions as vice president of sales, North Carolina.

“This expansion of its responsibilities recognizes that Atlantic Emergency Solutions has established itself as a well-respected provider of fire and emergency vehicles and equipment,” said Dan Peters, Pierce vice president of sales. “With Gerald joining the Atlantic Emergency Solutions team, we expect this will be a seamless transition. We are thankful for the many contributions of Dick Hastings and Triad.”

EMBRY-RIDDLE AERONAUTICAL UNIVERSITY’s Worldwide Campus now offers a bachelor of science degree in fire science. The new program carries the “Certificate of Recognition” from the National Fire Academy’s Fire Emergency Services Higher Education (FESHE) program.

Embry-Riddle’s program is based on the FESHE model curriculum for a bachelor’s degree and meets the higher-education criteria set by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC).

Coursework for the fire science degree incorporates analytical approaches to fire dynamics and fire protection, fire prevention organization and management, fire analysis and investigation, disaster planning including dealing with hazardous materials, administration and personnel management, and the political and legal issues involved in fire services.

The degree program offers two tracks. The Aviation Emergency Management specialization focuses on fire and aviation safety, leadership and management skills, and the technical knowledge needed to lead fire and emergency services organizations into the future. The Fire & Emergency Services specialization focuses on leadership and management skills and the technical knowledge needed to lead fire and emergency services organizations.
