NC Firefighter Falls from Responding Apparatus

A North Carolina firefighter was injured after he was ejected from an apparatus on the way to a call Sunday.

Cleveland crews were responding to a fire at a two-story house in Garner shortly after 1 p.m., according to the department. Ten additional tankers were requested from the Johnston County Tanker Task Force because the subdivision was served by a private water system without any hydrants.

Two miles from the incident, a Cleveland firefighter was putting on SCBA gear, and it became tangled in his seat belt, the department said. To become untangled, the firefighter unbuckled his seat belt as the apparatus made a turn, throwing him against the door and the latch.

The door opened, and the firefighter fell onto the roadway. He suffered minor abrasions and bruises, was taken to the hospital as a precaution and has been released, according to the department.

The residential fire was put out just before 2:30 p.m.

In April, three Cleveland firefighters were injured when their apparatus hydroplaned across a slick road while responding to a call. The apparatus hit a ditch and struck a tree before finally flipping on its side.
