The Kansas City firefighters were entering an intersection when their apparatus collided with a car, seriously injuring the driver, who needed to be extricated.

An accident involving a Missouri apparatus injured four firefighters and seriously injured a civilian Wednesday.

The accident happened shortly after 12:20 p.m. at a Kansas City intersection, KSHB-TV reports. A Kansas City Fire Department apparatus was responding to a call when it collided with a Nissan Altima.

Crews that arrived at the scene needed to extricate the Altima's driver from her vehicle, KCTV-TV reports. She was seriously injured in the accident and was taken to the hospital in stable condition.

Four firefighters also were injured in the collision. They were taken to the hospital, and their injuries aren't considered life-threatening, according to KSHB.

The cause of the accident is under investigation. Police Sgt. Bill Mahoney said the collision might have happened because the woman might not have heard the apparatus before she entered the intersection.

Ultimately, the initial call the firefighters were responding to turned out to be a false alarm. Dust kicked up by workers near a storage unit is being blamed for it, according to KCTV.
