Brand New NY Apparatus Escapes Close Call

The Troy Fire Department's Engine 6, placed in service last week, escaped a serious accident as it was sideswiped by a driver fleeing police.

Aug. 25—TROY, NY — The city's new fire truck was sidewiped on Second Street Tuesday afternoon by a vehicle running from the State Police after crossing into the city on the Menands Bridge, State Police and city fire officials confirmed.

Engine 6 had responded to a call in South Troy when the vehicle collided with it and sped away northbound at about 1:30 p.m., Fire Chief Eric McMahon said. The car lost a door handle and sideview mirror from sideswiping the pumper, said Trooper Kerra Burns, a spokeswoman for Troop G. No injuries were reported.

The new engine escaped the incident unscathed and was back in service almost immediately, McMahon said. The engine had responded to a call on Second Street from the Canal Street Fire Station.

The new pumper was placed in service last week.

A troop car was pursuing the vehicle south on I-787 and broke off the chase when the vehicle left the highway at Route 378 going into Troy, Burns said. A helicopter from the State Police Aviation Unit participated in hunting for the vehicle.
