A sedan struck a South Hill Volunteer Fire Department command vehicle before slamming into a pumper on Interstate 85.

Two South Hill Volunteer Fire Department vehicles were struck on Interstate 85 Sunday morning while blocking an accident scene.

No first responders were injured in the crash, but the driver of the sedan that struck a pumper and pickup truck was injured, according to a statement from Fire Chief Michael Vaughn.

Crews from the South Hill Volunteer Fire Department and Southside Rescue Squad were dispatched to a two vehicle crash about 6:13 a.m. and crews protected the left lane as crews worked the scene.

Just after 6:30 a.m., a sedan crashed into the South Hill command vehicle, a pickup truck, and then struck Engine 72, according to the fire department's Facebook page.

Fire officials said no emergency personnel sustained injuries, however seven people were injured in the two crashes.

The driver of the car that struck the fire apparatus was trapped and firefighters performed extrication efforts to remove them.

"To our communities, thank you for your continued support and know that as a result of this crash you will not see any loss in services should an emergency arise," the department posted. "Special thanks to all Mutual Aid agencies this morning and our Ladies Auxiliary for your assistance."

"As first responders, we respond to numerous emergencies each and everyday with the mission and dedication to provide quality service to the victims and ensure we ALL make it home safely at the end of each and every incident," Chief Vaughn shared. "I can’t stress enough the importance of slowing down and moving over when you see emergency vehicles operating on scene."
