SCIO TOWNSHIP, MI - A fire engine was stolen near Ann Arbor on Friday afternoon.
Scio Township firefighters were on a detail near the intersection of Zeeb and Jackson roads when around 1 p.m., a suspect unknown to the fire department entered one of the township’s fire engines and drove off, Fire Chief Andrew Houde said in a statement.
Firefighters immediately noticed and alerted police.
Officials located the suspect traveling east into Ann Arbor on Jackson Avenue in the stolen fire engine. Ann Arbor police stopped the vehicle near Jackson Avenue and Lakeview Drive, detained the suspect and turned them over to the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office.
The fire department is still evaluating the engine, Houde said. As of 2:46 p.m., it appears there is no damage or missing equipment, he said.
The investigation into the circumstances that allowed this to occur is ongoing, according to Houde.
“Most importantly, we are grateful that no civilians were injured in this incident,” he said.
