Dashcam video posted on YouTube captured the brutal scene that unfolded when at least six vehicles smashed into one another on California's Highway 50, leaving a box truck on its side and five people injured.
The incident occurred at 7:37 a.m. on westbound 50 east of 59th Street in Rancho Cordova, just outside Sacramento, according to the Sacramento Fire Department.
The department said the crash also involved a private ambulance that wasn't transporting a patient.
The injuries were all minor, the fire department said.
Asa Kania, who posted the video footage on YouTube, shared that he called 911 immediately.
"No, I didn't stick around to help as I would only have gotten in the way," Kania wrote in the description for the video.
Kani spoke with Fox 40 and said he shared the video in hopes of warning people to drive carefully. If he hadn't been paying close attention at the time of the crash, he believes he could have rear-ended the cars.
"Yeah, if I had looked down for anything at that moment, to change the radio station, you know, had I been listening to the radio, I could have missed it and been right up on them," Kania said.
The driver of the box truck also spoke with Fox 40 and said he, his co-worker and 6-year-old son were all in the cab of the vehicle.
The crash led to a massive traffic backup for more than two hours during the Monday morning commute, according to the Sacramento Bee.
