A man stole a Los Angeles Fire Department command vehicle and led police on a chase for about an hour last week.
The battalion command fleet vehicle had been parked in the city's downtown area when it was taken shortly before 2 p.m. Friday, KTLA-TV reports. At least a half-dozen police cruisers began pursuing the vehicle through the San Pedro area by tracking the GPS transponder.
During the chase, one of the rig's tires appeared to be blown out—possibly by spike strips—and the vehicle pulled into a parking lot. The driver then exited the vehicle and surrendered to officers, who took him into custody.
According to the LAFD, the vehicle appeared to only sustain damage to at least one tire.
"The vehicle will be thoroughly examined and receive any necessary repairs before being returned to emergency duty," the department stated, according to KTLA.
Fire and police investigators are looking into the incident.
