A fire truck was struck by a hit-and-run driver as firefighters were responding to a structure fire in East Haven on Tuesday evening.
The crash occurred at 6:38 p.m. as an East Haven Fire Department engine was traveling north on Hemingway Avenue with its lights and sirens on heading to a fire reported in the Foxon area of town, according to Capt. Joseph M. Murgo of the East Haven Police Department.
Murgo said the driver of a red Scion TC, which may have had black doors, failed to yield and turned directly in front of the fire truck. The collision led to the fire engine striking a pedestrian crosswalk signal at the intersection of Dodge Avenue and Hemingway Avenue. The fire truck sustained significant front end damage.
No firefighters were injured.
According to Murgo, the driver of the Scion took off and continued north on Hemingway Avenue before turning west onto Edward Street.
Murgo said investigators are asking area residents to check their home surveillance cameras for footage of the suspect vehicle. Anyone with information is asked to contact the East Haven Police Department at 203-468-3820.
