Lawsuit Settled in Death of MO Fire Lieutenant

Feb. 13, 2017
Lt. Bruce Britt was killed in a balcony collapse at the University of Missouri - Columbia in 2014.

The family of a Columbia firefighter who died in a 2014 balcony collapse has settled a lawsuit.

Leigh Britt's lawsuit cited negligence by the University of Missouri in fire Lt. Bruce Britt's death.

The settlement amount remains confidential, according to the Missourian. Some of the settlement will be used for an annuity for Britt's daughter.

The lawsuit was filed in April 2014, two months after Britt was fatally crushed when a balcony collapsed on Feb. 22.

Britt was helping students evacuate from an earlier collapse when a balcony fell on him.

According to investigators, a report from the university said the buildings should have been torn down by 2011 due to safety concerns.

A NIOSH report said poor communications and a lack of situational awareness contributed to Britt's death.

The university denied liability in the death and settled to avoid a lengthy and costly trial.
