NY Approves Gender-Neutral Fire, Police Job Titles

May 2, 2018
The term “fireman” is headed toward extinction after the New York Assembly approved a bill on the use of gender-neutral titles like "firefighter."

May 02 -- ALBANY, NY-- No need to call the first responders for these words.

The terms “policeman” and “fireman” appear headed toward extinction in state law.

The Assembly on Tuesday approved a bill that would replace them with the preferred and gender-neutral “firefighter” and “police officer.”

“Women make up an important part of our police force and firehouses, and it’s time New York State laws reflect that,” Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie (D-Bronx) said.

The measure was approved by the Senate last month and is now headed to Gov. Cuomo’s desk.

Cuomo spokesman Rich Azzopardi said the governor will review the bill.
