Matthew Twomey was arrested and charged with felony theft for allegedly stealing equipment worth more than $1,500 from the South Hampton Fire Department.

DOVER -- Dover police arrested a city resident and former firefighter for stealing equipment from the South Hampton Fire Department where he used to work, according to officials.

Matthew Twomey, 39, was arrested Wednesday and charged with felony theft by unauthorized taking after a search of his apartment at 557 Central Ave., Apt. 309, turned up equipment that had been missing from the South Hampton Fire Department -- equipment worth more than $1,500.

The investigation began Dec. 11 when Twomey said after a traffic stop that he had been responding to a fire scene in North Hampton, police officials said.

Dover police detectives investigated Twomey's statements. South Hampton fire officials said he had not been working for that department since February 2016.

Twomey was released on personal recognizance bail.

He will be arraigned on the charge in Strafford County Superior Court on Jan. 17, officials said.
