All Isleton, CA, Career Firefighters Sidelined by City Council

Jan. 22, 2025
Budget woes were cited for the decision to lay off the four firefighters in Isleton.

Career firefighters in Isleton were sidelined Tuesday night by the city council who said they can't afford them.

The move involves four full-time and part-time firefighters as well as three other city employees, according to KCRA.

"The City is not in [a] financial position to directly provide fire protection services. In order to preserve cash resources while also protecting public infrastructure, the city's payroll expenses must be modified," officials wrote in a report.

The projected loss for fiscal year 2024 is currently listed at $294,868 with the fire department payroll exceeding that department's dedicated fire revenue by $115,000.

There are volunteer firefighters in the Isleton Fire Department, and their role will be examined in the next two weeks.

The River Delta Fire Protection District fire chief told officials Tuesday night he is willing to help.

"River Delta is open to the possibility and likely can provide a substantially higher level of service than what the city currently provides on its own," read an executive summary of that agenda item.
