A 9-year-old boy suffered life-threatening injuries to the face Monday when an at-home s’mores kit caused a townhouse fire in Laurel, according to the Anne Arundel County Fire Department.

After receiving an emergency call at 3:51 p.m., a team of 48 firefighters responded to the 8500 block of Crooked Tree Lane, where the second floor of a three-story townhome was on fire.

Capt. Jenny Macallair, a department spokesperson, said it took firefighters 10 minutes to extinguish the flames, which Macallair said caused “minimal damage” to the home.

Two people inside, the boy and one of his parents, were both injured.

Macallair said the child suffered “extensive burns to the face” and was taken by ambulance to the Johns Hopkins Pediatric Burn Center in Baltimore.

The parent, whose hands were burnt, was treated at the scene and released, Macallair said.

Describing the fire as “accidental,” investigators determined Tuesday that the fire originated from an at-home s’mores kit, which allows users to burn marshmallows inside.

The 3-story townhome was the only house damaged during Monday’s fire, Macallair said.
