Two people were killed and four others injured Thursday in an early morning fire at an assisted-living facility in Centennial fire, according to South Metro Fire Rescue.

The department said the fire was started accidentally by the “improper disposal of smoking materials” outside the building.

The fire sparked at about 2:23 a.m. in the facility on South Oneida Court, near Heritage Elementary School, according to fire officials.

South Metro officials confirmed the building that caught fire was an assisted living center located at 6610 S. Oneida Court.

That address is We Care Homes of Colorado Inc.’s St. Francis Assisted Living Facility II, according to the organization’s website. The facility can house up to 10 people, according to We Care Homes.

Four people were rescued from the residence and taken to the hospital just before 3 a.m., fire officials said. When most of the fire was put out, firefighters searched the house to ensure the electricity was shut off.

Paramedics took two more people to the hospital at about 3:11 a.m. and 3:20 a.m., according to South Metro Fire Rescue.

Two of the six people injured in the fire died from their injuries, according to an 8:04 a.m. update from the fire department.

Information on the other four victims’ conditions was not available.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
