Close Call for Monmouth Junction, NJ, Fire Chief, Son

July 2, 2024
The two were sitting in their living room watching TV when a car crashed into their South Brunswick home.

A fire chief had a close call this past weekend. But, it wasn't responding to or on the scene of an emergency.

It happended while Monmouth Junction Fire Chief Scott Smith and his 5-year-old son were watching TV in their living room.

"...All of a sudden I heard a noise outside. It sounded like an engine racing pretty loudly," Smith told abc7.

"I saw it coming at me. I don't think I could tell it was moving. I just saw it there and heard the loud noise and then, within a fraction of a second, it struck the house.

He and his son were just feet away from where the car came to a stop. They were OK.

"I didn't even have time to think or react. There was a leather chair right in front of the window where it was struck. And, it flew right in front of my son and myself and landed in our dining room."

Smith determined the driver had suffered a seizure which caused him to lose control of the car.
