An off-duty Danbury fire official came to the rescue thousands of feet in the air.
Deputy Fire Chief Bill Lounsbury was flying back from a work-related conference in Las Vegas on Wednesday night, when an announcement was made asking for medical personnel on board who could help a passenger who was having an anaphylactic reaction.
Lounsbury told the flight crew he was an advanced emergency medical technician and teamed up with a Connecticut pediatrician to treat the patient.
The doctor was only used to pediatric doses, and so Lounsbury helped with the adult dosage.
“With his many years of field experience as an A-EMT, D.C. Lounsbury knew the dose to be 0.3 mg and assisted the doctor in administering the needed medication,” according to a press release from the Danbury Fire Department.
He and the doctor helped the passenger until the plane landed at 5:30 a.m. Thursday at the John F. Kennedy International Airport. The patient was stable and didn’t need an ambulance.
“Day or night, on duty or off duty, first responders are always ready to jump into action,” the press release said. “Great work D.C. Lounsbury!”
