CLEVELAND, Ohio – A man died and two paramedics were seriously hurt after a driver crashed his Jeep into an ambulance early Tuesday morning.

The Jeep’s driver, Jason Slepsky, was charged with aggravated vehicular homicide, aggravated vehicular assault and drunken driving in Chardon Municipal Court.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol said troopers responded to Ohio 528 and Chardon-Windsor Road at about 12:30 a.m. for the two-car crash.

A 2022 Ford F550 ambulance from the South Central Ambulance District in Ashtabula County was traveling southbound on Ohio 528. It was taking a patient to University Hospitals in Geauga.

Slepsky, in a 1995 Jeep Wrangler, failed to yield at the stop sign as he went eastbound on Chardon-Windsor Road and struck the ambulance.

The ambulance flipped over and traveled off the road. The Jeep caught fire.

The patient inside the ambulance, identified by troopers as William Maley Jr., 47, from Dorset, died at the scene. Two paramedics were taken to area hospitals. They were in serious condition.

Slepsky, 36, of Chardon, was also taken to University Hospitals in Geauga with minor injuries. He was wearing a seat belt, troopers said.

The state patrol said alcohol and drugs were suspected to be factors in the crash.

Cleveland.com and The Plain Dealer reached out to Slepsky’s attorney, Catherine Meehan, for comment.
