LAS VEGAS --
One person was hospitalized after a mattress caught fire on the 25th floor of the Bally’s Hotel and Casino on Sunday.
"It was confined to that room and the safety systems in the building actually contained the fire until our crews could come up and make sure it was out," said Clark County Fire spokesman Ken Morgan.
Guests were evacuated from the tower on the Las Vegas Strip. The evacuation was orderly and the county’s firefighting procedures “worked perfectly,” Morgan said.
One of the worst fires in Las Vegas history occurred at the same property on Nov. 21, 1980, when it was called the MGM Grand.
The fire claimed the lives of 85 people, something that wasn’t lost on firefighters.
"When the alarm came in and I got the page that came to my mind,” Morgan said. “It's the same hotel that burned in 1980, of course that kind of brings up thoughts."
The cause of Sunday's fire is under investigation.
