Four Mehlville firefighters were injured yesterday while battling a blaze, according to St. Louis Globe-Democrat.
The Mehlville Fire Protection District responded to the blaze in the afternoon in the 9800 block of Tesson Estates Drive.
Chief Tim White told the newspaper that when firefighters arrived, smoke and flames were shooting out of the rear of the home. They went in to rescue the homeowner, who they later discovered had already been helped out of the house by neighbors.
He said that while they were in the home the roof suddenly caved in, injured the firefighters. Crews were forced out of the structure and continued fighting the flames from the outside.
Two firefighters were taken to an area hospital where one remains with a back injury while the second was treated and released for second degree burns to his neck, according to the report.
The two other firefighters were treated at the fire scene for dehydration.
There is no official word on the cause of the blaze and fire inspectors are still investigating.
