Gwinnett Fire Capt. Thomas Rutledge said the cause of the fire remains under investigation. He said police officers arrived shortly after 1 a.m. Sunday at Huntington Village Apartments.

Heavy flames were visible from outside the building, so officers went door-to-door evacuating residents, including some who had to climb through ground-floor apartment windows to escape.

One man was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta for treatment of burns. His name was not released and his condition was unavailable.

The Red Cross is helping about 20 other displaced residents find shelter.
