GREENVILLE, S.C. --
Firefighters worked Thursday morning to extinguish the last of a fire that damaged a building at an Upstate motel and sent guests scrambling out of their rooms for safety.
There are three buildings at the Econo Lodge on Orchard Park Drive in Greenville County, but the fire was centered in a building that was unoccupied and under renovation.
The fire alarm was sounded at 7:25 a.m at the motel, located off Haywood Road across Interstate 385 from Haywood Mall.
When emergency crews arrived, they evacuated guests from their rooms for safety.
Guests reported seeing smoke on the side of the building and an employee told WYFF News 4 that the building was in flames before firefighters were able to contain them.
A guest told News 4's Sean Muserallo that she heard banging and someone screaming that there was a fire.
The guest said she and her friends ran out to the parking lot.
Fire officials said that no guests were injured, but one firefighter slipped on ice and was taken to the hospital with a minor injury.
There is no ruling on the cause of the fire, but fire officials said that they're looking at the possibility it was electrical.
