MELBOURNE, Fla. --

A St. Lucie County firefighter accused of taking a Melbourne man's severed leg from a crash site last month has resigned.

Cindy Economou, 38, told investigators that she took the leg, which was severed in a crash Sept. 19, to help train her cadaver dog.

A supervisor told Economou not to take the man's leg, Local 6 News reported.

The victim, Karl Lambert, 46, had to have his leg amputated at the site of the crash, which occurred on Interstate 95.

Lambert's attorney said it is not known if his client's leg could have been reattached at the hospital if it would not have been taken.
