DETROIT --

A man is in critical condition after he was pulled from a burning home, authorities said.

Witnesses said a home at Lee Place and Rosa Parks Boulevard on Detroit's west side exploded when the man lighted a cigarette on the top porch.

Authorities said more than 70 percent of his body suffered burns.

Another man who was in the street and was speaking with the victim was thrown back about 15 feet by the force of the explosion, authorities said. He is expected to survive.

The fire spread to a vacant apartment building next door, but firefighters were able to get the flames under control.

They are also continuing to search for more people who may be inside.
