MOUNT AIRY --

A family escaped unharmed Tuesday morning from a Mount Airy house fire that killed their dog.

Firefighters were called around 10:45 a.m. to a home in the 5600 block of Buttercup Lane, where they found flames and heavy smoke at the rear of the building.

The fire heavily damaged the first and second floors at the rear of the home, in addition to portions of the attic, and the home suffered smoke and water damage elsewhere.

A dog was unable to escape the fire, investigators said, and two cars in the home's driveway were badly damaged.

Damage was estimated at $150,000, including the vehicles, and the cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
