HOWELL, Mich. --

Firefighters in Howell came to the rescue of human, canine and feline residents when the Washington Square Apartments caught fire Saturday night.

Resident Don Hamilton described how he and his girlfriend got out. "It was pretty hectic. I thought she was sleeping. They wouldn't let me get her," he said. "They had to bring her over the balcony and she was kicking and fighting the whole way because she wanted to go back and save the animals."

Firefighters told Local 4 in addition to pulling several people off the balconies of their apartments, they also pulled 30 cats, 16 dogs and a dove from the burning building.

"There were a lot of animals in there. Firefighters were getting two at a time under each arm," said Howell Fire Chief Andy Pless.

Sixteen people were displaced by the fire. One woman had to be treated for smoke inhalation, but no one else was hurt.
