MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. --

Four firefighters were hospitalized Thursday after battling an apartment fire in west Miami-Dade County.

The fire started at about 10:30 a.m. on the fourth floor of the Fontainebleau Milton, located at 9521 Fontainebleau Blvd.

Sky 10 was in the air as black smoke could be seen protruding from the building.

Firefighters said a couple that were trapped in their apartment by the smoke tried to crawl to safety. A neighbor who lived adjacent to the couple couldn't see through the thick smoke and tried to crawl out of her apartment, burning her hand on the metal door handle.

In all, nine residents were treated for minor injuries. About 100 residents were evacuated.

Four firefighters were transported to an area hospital. Their conditions were not immediately available.

It took about 100 firefighters to battle the blaze.

About 20 units on the fourth floor were damaged.
