The city has approved a $1.64 million contract to rearm the Fire Department with 600 radiation detectors that could be used to respond to a "dirty" nuclear-bomb attack, The Post has learned.
John Anderson, owner of the Atlantic Nuclear Corporation of Canton, Mass., who was awarded the bid, said the detectors are used for Homeland Security "disaster planning" as well as to detect lower levels of radiation in fires in structures containing hazardous materials.
Before 9/11, only specialized FDNY units had radiation detectors. Now virtually all engine and ladder trucks do.
