WILKINSBURG, Pa. --

Part of Penn Avenue in Wilkinsburg was shut down Wednesday morning as firefighters worked to bring flames under control at an apartment building.

The fire started around 8 a.m. on Penn Avenue between Wood and Center streets.

Pittsburgh firefighters were called in to help battle the blaze.

Fire crews were kept from going inside the building for fear of the roof collapsing.

The fire chief told Channel 11 all 10 people living inside the building we able to make it out safely.

Nearly a dozen people are homeless and several businesses are gone.
