HOGBACK, N.M. --

Firefighters had to cut a woman out of her car when it landed in a canal near Hogback in San Juan County.

It happened late Wednesday evening off Navajo Road 36, Action 7 News reported.

The driver was pinned under the steering wheel when her car rolled onto its side.

A neighbor arrived after the wreck and tried to keep the woman calm.

Julia Bitsue said, "I tried holding her hand. You know, until the officers arrived, and then I helped the officer try to break the front window. We tried opening the doors first, but we ended up having to break the windshield."

Navajo police said they believe the woman had been drinking.

She was taken to a Shiprock hospital for treatment.
