CHARLOTTE, N.C. --

Firefighters worked quickly to put out a fire at the Matthews Reserve Apartments early Wednesday.

Investigators say the blaze started on the deck of a third-floor apartment in the complex off Sam Newell Road, which is near Crestdale Middle School

About 40 people were evacuated, but no one was injured or displaced.

The fire is still under investigation.

Six families at an apartment complex in Belmont were not so lucky. They lost their homes after a fire at the Rein Apartments on Springwood Road late Tuesday.

Investigators are still looking for the cause there also.

The Red Cross gave the tenants a place to stay for the night.

A local fire chief said without help the situation would have been a lot worse.

"We had six departments on scene at the same time; a lot of good teamwork to get this fire under control when we did, said Chief Robert Jackson.

Jackson said fire officials should know by Wednesday afternoon how much damage the fire caused.
