KANSAS CITY, Mo. --

Emergency crews answering a fire call found a 5-year-old boy home alone in a burning apartment, authorities said.

KMBC's Brenda Washington reported that a neighbor called 911 at about 3 a.m. Wednesday after hearing smoke alarms going off in a third-floor apartment. Arriving firefighters spotted smoke pouring out from under the door.

Washington reported that when they went inside, they found the boy hiding under a blanket in his room. He was treated for minor smoke inhalation.

Police said the boy's father was at work when the fire started. Investigators allege the man's 32-year-old wife set his clothes on fire in the bathtub, then took off with their 8-month-old daughter, leaving the boy behind.

Officers said that they found the mother and baby at a nearby motel. Authorities said that they also found what appeared to be a hate note left for her husband in the apartment.

Washington reported that the mother was taken into custody. No charges have been filed.
