SHARONVILLE --

A Hamilton firefighter critically injured in a training accident is continuing to improve.

Doctors said that Chris Gabbard's lungs are clear of fluid, and he is breathing without a ventilator.

Gabbard was trapped underwater for more than 20 minutes earlier this month after his boat flipped during a training exercise.

A friend told News 5 that when Gabbard's wife spoke to him over the weekend, Gabbard opened his eyes and focused on her.

In an effort to help Gabbard's family, the fire department has set up the Firefighter Chris Gabbard Family Fund. Those wishing to donate may do so at any location of Chaco Credit Union or 5/3rd Bank.
