New York Tractor Trailer Crashes, Ignites

There is no report on the driver's condition.

(New York - WABC, May 1, 2007) - A tractor trailer overturned and is on fire at the intersection of the New York State Thruway, Route 287 and Route 17 in Hillburn, New York near the New Jersey border.

Police tell Eyewitness News Rt. 17 is closed at this time. Motorists traveling southbound are advised to plan for severe delays and may wish to seek alternate routes.

The truck was delivering materials to McDonalds. There is no report on the driver's condition.

Emergency crews from Rockland and Bergen Counties are responding to the scene, which has been the location of a number of horrific truck accidents in recent years.

In June 2000, a truck driven by a Pennsylvania driver plunged off the flyover, killing that driver and nearly causing a major blackout.

An earlier crash involving a propane tanker at about the same location triggered a major evacuation of the nearby Village of Suffern.

The Authority has activated its Highway Advisory Radio (HAR) and Dynamic Message Signs (DMS) to alert motorists of the road closure. The Authority has also sent TRANSalerts to subscribers.
