The blaze started in the attic.

Omaha firefighters rescued a man Thursday who was asleep inside a burning house.

Flames gutted a home at 2173 N. 125th Ave.

Investigators said they think the fire began in the attic area and spread quickly.

A passer-by notified authorities of the fire at about 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

"To gain access to the house, we had to kick down the front door. Two of us went to put out a fire a third searched the house and found a man sleeping. We woke him up and he got out (without) injuries. We also found two pets that got out safely," said Brian Sorenson, battalion chief of the Omaha Fire Department.

Fire investigators still don't know what caused the fire. One firefighter injured his eye at the scene.
