JEANNETTE, Pa. --

Firefighters in Westmoreland County were up all night trying to put out a house fire in Jeannette.

The fire started on North Frothingham Drive at about 12:30 a.m. Tuesday, and firefighters needed three hours to bring it under control.

According to crews, one firefighter was injured fighting the blaze, which was caused by lightning.

Crews said lightning tore through two floors of the building, continued through the house underground and blew up the street's water main.

Part-time firefighter Chuck Miller received second-degree burns on his face while fighting the blaze.

"I had to take the hood off while I was inside, because it kept burning," said Miller. "It's just a level of protection. Anything and everything can fail."

All three families who were inside were able to get out unharmed.

"The smoke alarms were activated in the building when we pulled up on scene, so they did help," said Chief Michael Bertolino of the Jeannette Fire Department.

Crews from the water authority spent the day replacing the water line, which left residents without service for hours.

Service has since been restored.
