REVERE, Mass.-- A Revere man trapped inside his blazing basement apartment yesterday was rescued when a firefighter fell over him.

Firefighters arrived at the two-story, multifamily house at 895 Broadway shortly after midnight yesterday, said Deputy Chief Robert Eydenberg. A man was trapped inside.

"The first officer in the building actually tripped over him," Eydenberg said. Severely burned and suffering from smoke inhalation, the man is recovering at Massachusetts General Hospital, Eydenberg said. He didn't identify the victim, but said he was around 50 years old.

The fire was contained to one or two rooms in the basement. No one else was injured.

Firefighters are still investigating the cause of the blaze, but believe it was started by a cigarette, Eydenberg said.

No one else in the house was injured. Damage is estimated to be around $35,000.
