ALBANY, N.Y.-- City firefighters were stymied in their attempts to get to an upstairs bedroom to douse a blaze Monday morning by three large pit bulls on the first floor.

Emergency crews arrived on the scene of 25 Center Street at about 9:45 a.m. to find the three animals at the front door.

An animal control officer was called to make sure the dogs were not a danger, and fire crews were able to put out the blaze. There was fire damage to the upstairs and significant water damage to the entire one-family home, said Batallion Chief Bill Moore.

The fire started in a mattress in the upstairs bedroom, but the exact cause is still unknown, said Moore.

No one was home at the time and no injuries were reported. After the blaze was put out, the three dogs were sitting in an empty lot near the home, drinking from plastic water dishes.
