Lengthy Response to Fire Dooms Ohio Home

Officials expect to see a new fire station built in that area very soon.

Firefighters responded to a call for a garage fire in the 3900 block of Top Flite Lane in Mason Sunday evening. The fire quickly spread through to the rest of the home, causing extensive damage.

Officials admit the response to the scene was delayed because the closest fire station is in downtown Mason.

Mason Fire Chief Rich Fletcher said Mason city officials are trying to determine the best and most efficient way to cover the northern parts of the city.

He expects to see a new fire station built in that area very soon.

Firefighters said the closest fire hydrant, across the street from the fire, was out of service, but that there were three other hydrants close to the home that were used.

The homeowners were on vacation at the time and a cousin who was staying in the home made it out safely.

Officials said that chemicals stored in the garage used for the family's flooring business may have accelerated the fire, making it harder to fight.

This is the same neighborhood where a home was destroyed in May 2005.

That fire prompted studies of the department and concluded that a new fire station was needed, more full-time firefighters were needed and that the current firefighters needed more training.
