D.C. firefighters ended up putting out two blazes early Friday morning in neighboring houses on the same block.
Fire officials said the first fire started just before 1 a.m. in the 4200 block of Massachusetts Avenue Southeast. Officials said the fire started in the basement of the house and spread to the other floors through the walls.
A resident was able to rescue his wheelchair-bound mother from the house before fire crews arrived, officials said.
About 20 minutes after the first fire, a fire broke out in the house next door. Fire crews called for a second alarm to help battle that blaze.
The cause of both fires is under investigation, but officials said it does not look as if the second fire started from a spark from the first.
Three people have been displaced because of the first house fire, officials said. There was no one home at the second house when that fire started.
