An unusual scene unfolded on Wednesday for many people traveling along Connecticut Avenue in the District.

For more than an hour, onlookers watched as firefighters and animal control officers tried to free a deer that was stuck in a fence.

Many said it was a difficult sight. The doe somehow lodged its head through a metal fence at the Intelstat building.

Rescuers worked to free the doe, but it died while workers tried to extricate it.

Officials said reports of deer running wild around the D.C. area have recently increased.

Last October, two deer jumped into the water at the Tidal Basin and then refused to come out. Rescuers had to tranquilize the animals and bring them in by boat.

In the past few months, deer also made some unexpected appointments at two local hair salons. One deer jumped through a window at a hair salon in Arlington last fall. Another charged through the front window of a tanning salon in downtown Herndon in December.
